Founded in Long Beach, CA by a group of senior activists committed to improving access to the care and services they needed as they aged, SCAN is a recognized leader in senior care. As one of the nation’s largest not-for-profit Medicare Advantage plans, SCAN provides a range of community services, including the innovative programs of Independence at Home and Volunteer Action for Aging, and robust community education and community giving.
After the ONC and CMS proposed new rules around data sharing between payers and provider groups called the Interoperability Rule, or CMS 9115, SCAN wanted to implement an Enterprise Service Bus (ESB) to manage all APIs that provide access to claims data. To execute this task, SCAN decided to deploy InterSystems IRIS for Health as their data management platform and chose J2 Interactive as their implementation partner.
J2 has worked with SCAN to:
- Conduct a detailed requirements discovery
- Establish appropriate IRIS for Health systems infrastructure for SCAN
- Design, implement, and test application features to support SCAN’s requirements
To store the SCAN member/claims data in their IRIS repository, J2 used FHIR. We extracted, transformed, and loaded the data from the SCAN internal repository to store it in the FHIR server, which a Patient Access API then accesses to get the data.
With this successful integration of claims data into their systems, SCAN’s next goal remains to have additional integrations of clinical data from HIEs. J2 has provided overall guidance with the HIE onboarding process and is assisting SCAN to fulfill interoperability requirements.
